How much does a website cost in New Zealand? 2026 prices

A small business website in New Zealand typically costs $1,300 to $8,000 plus GST, and an online store $1,000 to $12,000 or more. This guide breaks down what you get at each price, the ongoing costs people forget, and how to compare quotes.

The short answer

  • One-page or landing page site: $800–$3,000.
  • Small business website (5–8 pages): $1,300–$8,000, with most quotes around $3,000–$6,000.
  • Larger business website (8–15+ pages): $5,000–$15,000.
  • Online store: $1,000–$3,000 for a basic Shopify setup, $4,500–$12,000 for a typical agency build, and $15,000–$70,000 for complex Shopify builds.

What drives the price

Template or custom design

A premium theme adjusted to your brand is quicker and cheaper; a fully custom design can add $1,000 to $5,000 or more. For most small service businesses, a well-built theme does the job, as long as it's fast. Page-builder themes are the most common reason small business websites fail Google's Core Web Vitals.

Number of pages

Each extra page typically adds $50 to $200. This is where cheap quotes become expensive later: a five-page site rarely has room for a page per service and per area, which is what most local businesses need to rank.

Who writes the content

Many quotes assume you'll supply all the text. Writing it yourself is the biggest hidden cost of a new website, in time if not money, and pages written without search in mind rarely rank. Ask whether copywriting is included and for how many pages.

Features and integrations

Online bookings, quote calculators, CRM or Xero connections, and member areas each add $500 to $5,000 depending on complexity.

SEO and migration

If you're replacing a site that already ranks, the redirects and content mapping that protect those rankings are often quoted separately or skipped. That's the step most likely to cost you traffic.

The ongoing costs

  • Hosting and care: $25–$120 a month for hosting, backups, security updates and small edits. Cheap hosting without updates is how WordPress sites get hacked.
  • Domain: about $25–$50 a year for a .co.nz.
  • Shopify subscription: from about NZ$48 a month, plus card fees and any paid apps.
  • SEO: optional, but a new site with no SEO work behind it rarely gets found. NZ plans range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars a month.

Freelancer, agency, offshore or DIY?

OptionTypical costWatch out for
DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace)$20–$50 a monthYour time, generic templates, limited SEO control.
Offshore team$500–$5,000Communication, NZ-specific content, who owns the site afterwards.
NZ freelancer$1,500–$8,000Availability, and whether SEO and copywriting are included.
NZ agency$3,990–$30,000+Account-management overheads and extras quoted after the fact.

How to compare website quotes

  • Count the pages, and check there's one for each service and area you want to be found for.
  • Ask who writes the content. If it's you, budget the time.
  • Ask for a mobile PageSpeed score from a site they built recently.
  • Check what SEO is included: page titles and headings, structured data, Search Console and Google Business Profile setup.
  • If you have a site already, ask how they'll handle redirects and protect your rankings.
  • Make sure you own everything: the domain, hosting account, content and Google accounts should be in your name.
  • Get the ongoing costs in writing, including hosting, care and any licences.
